Description: Black / White gelatin silver vintage photo of a small convoy of ships with supplies for Thule Air Base Pituffik (Thule base) in Greenland in 1952.
The text on the back of the photograph reads:
"A small U.S. Navy convoy heads for Thule, Greenland, carrying vitally needed supplies and equipment for the construction of the important northern air base.Official U.S. navy photo released by the Dept. of Defense."
On the back it also says that this is an official photograph taken by the US Army - contact the "Chief of Information, Navy Department, Washington 25, D.C.".
The construction of the air base was called Operation Blue Jay.
The construction of the base, carried out by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and others, continued in 1951 and continued into the 1950s. The US Army transported building materials in the form of steel, wood, trucks, construction machinery, fuel, food and other equipment and supplies in ship convoys from Norfolk, Virginia, to the Greenland coast off Thule / Pituffik.
