Bio: The island of Murano near Venice has been the center of Italian glassmaking since the Renaissance. In the 1950s and 60s, it gained international fame for the sommerso (submerged) technique, where layers of differently colored glass are fused together, creating striking depth and sculptural effects. These works became sought-after collector’s items in both Europe and the USA.
